“Dear Eli ~ On behalf of Communities In Schools - New Jersey, the Youth WORKS program, and the students of West Side High School, I extend our sincerest thanks for hosting such a wonderful program last week. The "Within Us" dance performance was phenomenal and presented a unique cultural and artistic venue for the students to gain exposure to professionally trained artists. I have received numerous calls and comments from the students, parents, and guests who attended, all were extremely positive. Thank you again for hosting our students. ~ Kind Regards,
Tamika Stembridge
"I am writing with a sense of infinite pride to tell you of a major arts event that took place on Saturday night Nov. 11, 2006. Garden State Dance Project performed in my art show at Ceres Gallery, 547 West 27th Street, NYC. For two hours she and her dancers created a sacred and profound experience for all who viewed their performance. The talent and passion for dance and music that was shown by the members of this troupe was extraordinary. With grace and soul, the dancers literally moved us through a range of emotions from laughter to tears. I have seen many performances in my life but none so mind blowing in its ability to tap into feelings and memories like this performance on Saturday evening. Their dancing made us even more aware of the pain and joy of the human condition, the beauty and resilience of the human spirit and the endangered earth on which we live.
I encourage you all to keep abreast of what GSDP is doing and to try and catch one of their performances in the future. My only regret is that everyone I know was not present for this wonderful event. ~ Sincerely, Liz Cohen
…The most vivid dance in SWEAT Outdoors could be performed anywhere, however. "Be Still," choreographed and danced by Elias Kababa and Kimberly Pinto, began with the two folding together to create a single creature that morphed into various shapes. The symbiotic duo experimented with cantilevered poses and others where isometric tension kept them in balance, as they pulled apart.
The mood changed, however, when it became obvious that Pinto was holding Kababa prisoner. He broke free in a solo, but when he grew exhausted she claimed him again, and they tumbled back into a knot.
Finally they turned sideways to face each other, lovers and antagonists locked together by an invisible force. At this point, absorbed viewers could practically feel the dancers' sharp intake of breath…” ~ Robert Johnson - Star-Ledger
